The first of The Ten Commandments says:
You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3 ESV
I believe what God is saying here is, “You need to LET GO of other things that you love, worship and desire before you can really have a right relationship with me.”
Letting Go to Love God Fully
This week I’m sharing what I know about loving God fully and one of the first steps is getting everything else out of the way.
Jesus plainly tells us:
No servant is able to serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (riches, or anything in which you trust and on which you rely). Luke 16:13 AMP
For a long time, I’ve let worldly things (like personal comfort) compete for the top spot in my life. I can tell you it doesn’t work.
I mean think about it. Do you want your spouse, who vowed to love, honor and cherish you, to bring other lovers into your bed? I don’t think so. Yet we do this to God all the time.
The first step in fully loving anyone is “forsaking all others”. You have to LET GO of the other gods (mammon) in your life so you can give your whole life to Him.
A Sad Story of Hanging On Too Tightly
In Matthew 19, Jesus tells a young man:
Go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. Matthew 19:21 NIV
When the man heard this, the Bible tells us:
He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Matthew 19:22 NIV
I don’t think money is specifically the man’s problem. I think it could have been anything.
There are all kinds of things that we can put before God. Including:
- A relationship
- Good Deeds
- Selfish Desires
- Material Possessions
This list could go on for miles. Each one of us has to examine our lives honestly to see what might be weakening our love for God.
I’m fully convinced that letting go is the first step in loving God like He wants to be loved.
Are you hanging on to something that you need to let go of?
