Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. James 3:13 NIV
A truly wise person is usually also very humble. They know enough to know they don’t know everything. This is especially the case if they are also a Christ Follower and truly wise people always are.
Human Wisdom vs. God’s Wisdom
Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise.
1 Corinthians 3:18 NLT
Worldly wisdom only goes so far. Therefore, to posses true wisdom one must humbly seek it from God.
Look at what Matthew Henry has to say on this:
To have a high opinion of our own wisdom, is but to flatter ourselves; and self-flattery is the next step to self-deceit. The wisdom that worldly men esteem, is foolishness with God. How justly does he despise, and how easily can he baffle and confound it! The thoughts of the wisest men in the world, have vanity, weakness, and folly in them. All this should teach us to be humble, and make us willing to be taught of God, so as not to be led away, by pretenses to human wisdom and skill, from the simple truths revealed by Christ. ~ Matthew Henry Commentary
The greatest worldly wisdom has vanity, weakness and folly in it. In other words, human wisdom is always faulty. We never see the complete picture. We are always operating as though we see through a dimly lit mirror. If we think we are wise, we are only deceived.
Like it or not, we are dependent on God. The wise acknowledge this and seek God’s guidance. They humbly ask Him for wisdom.
He Will Give You True Wisdom
I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king.
Daniel 2:23 NIV
If you trust God and ask Him for wisdom, He will give it to you when you need it. But, you have to be humble enough to recognize your need. Humility and wisdom go hand-in-hand.
