The second of the 12 Essential Ways to Copy Jesus says we need to submit to spiritual transformation.
But why? Why do we need to be transformed?
Because left to our own devices, our own natural tendencies, we will ruin our lives or at least not live the best lives possible.
Our Need for Spiritual Transformation
People are capable of AMAZING things, but by default, all human beings lean toward selfishness and sin. This is why we have to teach children to share, to play nice, to be polite, to obey the law, etc.
The Bible tells us:
The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Psalm 14:2-3 NIV
This is the human condition. We are told that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23), even people like Billy Graham and Mother Teresa.
Before any of us can really take a step toward copying Jesus, we have to realize and accept how lost we are.
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Isaiah 53:6 NLT
As a result of being off-track and thinking we know best, we develop a hole inside of us. We feel empty and unfilled. Many try to fill this hole with relationships, material possessions, work, achievement and hobbies. When these fail to fulfill us, we try to comfort ourselves with sex, alcohol, drugs, food, etc.
Look around. Watch the news. It is pretty obvious that we are lost and confused. People are hurting. Perhaps you are one of these people.
We Need a Renovation
In the end, we are powerless to “fix” ourselves. The ONLY solution is to allow Jesus into our hearts and submit to the spiritual transformation He wants to do in us.
The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows). John 10:10 AMP
Jesus has a better way. A way to live that is radically different than what we are used to, but INFINITELY BETTER.
As we are told in John 3:17, Jesus came to offer us salvation. He came to rescue us and offer us a fresh start.
But, we have to be willing to let Him change us from the inside out. We have to submit to His complete renovation.
He won’t be satisfied with a handful of new furnishings and a fresh coat of paint. No, He’s going to want to knock down some walls and shore up the foundation.
However, once He’s done, you’ll be a new creature filled with love, joy and peace beyond anything you’ve ever experienced!
