For a long time, I modeled my life after how the world says I should live. I didn’t really think about it, I just did it.
I pursued things like success, pleasure, money, affection and comfort. But, I found all these things to be fickle. It was as if I was chasing after the wind. Plus, under the surface, I felt hollow and unsatisfied.
So, I took a step back and reexamined my model. That’s when I discovered I was off-track. I slowly began to realize there is a better pattern to follow.
I Discovered Copying Jesus Is Better
The Bible tells us:
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
Copying Jesus is different than copying the world. He’s dependable. He never changes. I can trust Him to always be the same.
That’s definitely the kind of model I want to build a life on. I’m tired of counting on the fickle attitudes of the world where things are always in flux.
So, what else is in the Bible that led me to believe that copying Jesus is better? I’m glad you asked!
I found that the Apostle Paul told the church in Corinth:
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV
Paul copied Jesus and he told others to follow the same example! Keep in mind, this is the man that had learned the secret of being content in all circumstances (Philippians 4:12). This model definitely sounds better.
As I kept digging, I found more.
I’ve always been told that when the Bible repeats itself, God is trying to hammer home an important point.
To the Philippians, Paul says:
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9 NIV
Paul says the path to peace – a peace straight from God – is found as we follow the example that God provided us.
The puzzle pieces were beginning to come together for me.
That’s when I remembered what Jesus said:
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” Matthew 7:24-27 NLT
In the past, I built my house on the sand, but no more! I’m now building my life on the solid rock by copying Jesus.
This is really just the tip of the iceberg in terms of why I believe copying Jesus is better, but these discoveries are fundamental to why I now see things differently.
If you look at the 12 Essential Ways to Copy Jesus, you’ll notice that they lay out a radically different set of goals to pursue compared to the world’s model.
By really committing to Jesus’ example, I’m finding a whole new and more fulfilling way to live.
If you take an honest look at your life, what model are you following? How fulfilling is it really? Leave a comment or send me a message if you want to discuss it.
