A Christ Follower is a person that has a relationship with Jesus and desires to live life according to His teachings.
Why Make the Distinction?
I use the term Christ Follower as a simple way to emphasize the importance of living life the way Jesus taught us to live instead of getting caught up in religious traditions and groupthink.
I believe the terms Christian and Christ Follower are synonymous and that both are a part of the same big family. I want to emphasize that I don’t distinguish to draw a line in the sand as a way to judge some as uncommitted or unworthy.
I’m a Christ Follower and a Christian. I do not buy into the notion where some say they are not a Christian, but a Christ Follower.
Calling myself a Christ Follower simply helps me keep my head on straight about my faith and my relationship with Jesus. It is as simple as that. If it helps you, then use it. If not, then call yourself whatever works best for you.
Why Be a Christ Follower?
There are many reasons to be a Christ Follower. So many that I can’t go into all of them here. However, there is one that I’d like to point out in particular.
I believe that God loves us and sets out in the Bible a way for us to live that leads to an abundant, fulfilling, satisfying life. Jesus modeled that life and taught it to His disciples.
There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. Proverbs 16:25 (NASB)
This way that Jesus taught is pretty counterintuitive to us. So, I’m not saying that following Jesus is like getting a genie in a bottle to fulfill all your whims, desires and dreams.
What I am saying is that if we truly follow His way instead the way that seems right to us, then we’ll find it ultimately leads to a deep inner peace and satisfaction that is so often missing in our lives today.
Look around you. Are the things that people are chasing on a daily basis really providing them the life they truly desire? Or is it leaving them feeling dead inside? What about in your own life?
Embrace the Life of a Christ Follower
I used to have a site where I encouraged people in the area of self improvement. However, while developing positive habits is good, it only goes so far. On the other hand, Jesus offers us a completely new and improved life. One that is much different than what most live today.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
Maybe you’ve never known Jesus or perhaps you are already a Christian, but have never fully devoted yourself to living His way. In either case, I invite you to come along on this adventure to copy Jesus and live as a Christ Follower.
