God not only gives us eternal life, but He also wants to give us a great life, right here on Earth.
However, we often miss it.
We fail to live according to God’s principles – His guidance for the best life – and therefore, we interrupt His blessings.
It isn’t that God holds them back. He’s just put certain natural laws in place for how things work. If you understand these and live in accordance with them, then you will reap the benefit.
Three Rules to Be Blessed By
So, what are these rules that allow you to receive a great life?
Well, I can’t go into all of them here, but I saw these three the other day and I believe they go a long way toward what we are after.
In their original form, they were secular, but I think they help to explain some Biblical realities. I’ll back it up with scripture to prove what I’m saying.
Here we go:
1. If you do not GO after what you want, you’ll never have it.
You cannot just sit around, doing nothing and expect God to drop a great life into your lap. It won’t happen. You’ve got to listen to what He’s speaking to you and then GO. Get up off your rear-end and do what He’s prompting you to do.
This is illustrated in the story of Abram (who became Abraham):
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.
Genesis 12:1-4 NIV
It doesn’t matter how old you are or where you are in your life. If you stop making excuses, get up and GO in the direction that God is leading you, it will produce a harvest of blessing in your life.
If you feel your life isn’t as fulfilling as you wished it was, stop and ask yourself, “When was the last time that I got moving and went in a bold, new direction with God?”
Perhaps, it is time for you to GO after the dream God’s placed in your heart.
2. If you do not ASK, the answer will always be NO.
We get lulled into living life in a daze. We never stop to think that if we just ASK for what we want, we will get it. It seems too easy.
Yet, asking often works.
Look at what Jesus tells us about this.
Ask, and you will receive. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you. Everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. Would any of you give your hungry child a stone, if the child asked for some bread? Would you give your child a snake if the child asked for a fish? As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give good things to people who ask. Matthew 7:7-11
This is very plain, but this wasn’t the only time that Jesus addressed asking. Later, He told his disciples:
You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!
John 14:13-14 NLT
To me, based on these scriptures, ASKING seems like a pretty important Biblical concept. However, there are a couple of points about it that I don’t want you to miss.
First, I think what we ask for has to be in accordance with God’s will for our lives. If it isn’t, then we shouldn’t want it anyway because it isn’t going to produce the best results for us.
Second, God’s timing is perfect. Nowhere in these scriptures does Jesus say that we will get what we ASK for immediately. Many times in the Bible it is years before God fulfills His promises to His people, but His timing is always perfect.
ASK, and you will receive.
3. If you do not STEP FORWARD, you will always be in the same place.
At first glance, this rule seems very similar to the first rule that tells us to GO after the dream God has planted in our hearts. However, I believe there is a difference.
GOING is about moving when before we were still. This rule is about taking a STEP FORWARD away from one thing and toward another. This might not seem like a big difference (and there is certainly some overlap), but it is a difference worthy of our attention.
God tells us:
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV
I think what this rule is telling us is that you must advance beyond some of the things in your past.
When you STEP FORWARD, you leave something behind. If you remain planted, you will always be in the same place.
If the place you are at is a living hell, then STEP FORWARD. God will make a way in the wilderness for you. He will make streams in the wasteland.
Don’t remain stuck! Lean not on your own understanding. Lean on your faith, forgetting the former things and let God do a new thing in you.
These Rules Lead to a Great Life
These three simple Biblical rules for living can dramatically change your life.
How do I know? Because they are God’s rules. They fall in line with His Word. God is constantly trying to bless us. We just have to be willing to follow what He’s told us to do.
Have you applied these rules in your life? What was the result? Leave a comment and let me know.
