I believe that going deeper with God means allowing ourselves to be transformed by Him. It means submitting and engaging in a metamorphosis. If you want to go deeper, then you must surrender to a complete renovation by Jesus.
Where to Seek this Deep Renovation
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
In the essay So You Want to Go Deeper, the author concludes that a deeper relationship with God is only found in the richness of the Gospel. He argues that all too often people get sidetracked thinking that depth is found in “theological precision of interpreting biblical doctrines”. But, as the essay says, this is wrong.
It is easy to believe you are going deeper when you are able to successfully debate your point or when you impress others with your dramatic dissection of a Biblical story.
However, the truth is, that real depth is found in the very place that I often think is basic. If you want to go deeper, then start at the heart of the Gospel message.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 NIV
The climax of the Bible is found in the Gospel. This is the very heart of God exposed for all to see and grasp. There is no other gate by which you can enter a profound, rich relationship with God. Jesus made this clear:
I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. John 10:9 NIV
Jesus alone is the doorway, the path to a deeper relationship with God. To better understand Jesus, you have to ground yourself in the Gospel.
Depth Begins and Ends with Jesus
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Revelation 22:13 NIV
The beginning and end of any real transformation is found in the Gospel. It is in the very things that I’ve sometimes downplayed as too basic. Depth is found when one strives to be more like Jesus. He is the way to grow deeper with God.
