I’ve talked a lot now about my focus verse for 2014 (John 6:9), but I haven’t really said much about my word.
The idea is to choose one word that embodies what you’d like your focus or top priority to be for the year. By narrowing it down to a single word, you make it as easy as possible to memorize and concentrate upon.
Jesus Said Feed My Sheep
You might recall that my word is FEED. I chose it because of the following conversation that Jesus had with Peter:
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:17 NIV
To feed someone is to give them nourishment. The sheep that Jesus wants fed are those people that are already or will someday follow Him.
David Platt in his book, Follow Me, says that God wills for all people to hear, receive, embrace and respond to the gospel. He goes on to say:
Therefore, it is not shocking for Jesus’ first words to his disciples in the book of Matthew to be, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” In the days that followed, he taught them that he “came to seek and save what was lost,” and he told them that just as the Father had sent him into the world, he would send them into the world. Subsequently, we are not surprised when the last words of Jesus to his disciples are, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.”
How do you save the lost? How do you make disciples? You FEED them. Every last soul is hungry for Jesus whether they know it or not. That hole we feel inside us? It is starvation for Jesus. Sin? That’s simply our feeble attempt to fill the hole with anything other than Jesus.
I Will Feed Them
Our mission as Christ Followers – God’s will for our lives – is to make disciples. We are to be fishers of men.
I will do this anyway that I can. I will invite people to church. I will urge them to join a small group. I will buy them a Bible. I will buy them lunch. I will tell them what I know about Jesus. I will support and encourage others that are “fishers of men”. I will write articles like this one. I will use whatever means necessary (short of sin) to FEED people the Good News.
Bottom line, I will copy Jesus by feeding His sheep.
