Today, I want to share a word. A single word that sums up the lovingkindness of God.
A Word That Packs a Lot of Meaning
“For the mountains may be removed and the hills may shake, but My lovingkindness will not be removed from you, and My covenant of peace will not be shaken,” Says the LORD who has compassion on you. Isaiah 54:10 NASB
In the verse above, the Hebrew word hesed is translated as lovingkindness. In other places, it is rendered as unfailing love, faithful love or steadfast love. But, none of these really do it justice.
Nearly untranslatable in English, it is a word used to describe the unending faithfulness that God has for His people; a faithfulness that, even when rejected, remains true; even when snubbed, He is not offended; even when forgotten, does not forget. Hesed describes God’s undying commitment never to cease pursuing our hearts, never to cease desiring our best, never to cease employing whatever means necessary to gain our loving companionship so He can grant us the indescribable blessings of abundant and eternal life.
Lt. Carey Cash, A Table in the Presence
I read the passage above and was awestruck by hesed. I love what it says about God’s faithful lovingkindness toward us. We reject Him and He remains true. We snub Him and He is not offended. We forget all about Him, but He does not forget about us. He pursues us relentlessly.
Why? Why does God express hesed toward a sinner like me? Because that’s His nature. That’s who He is.
Ralph D. Davis describes hesed as follows:
It is not merely love, but loyal love; not merely kindness, but dependable kindness; not merely affection, but affection that has committed itself.
As you read the Bible, you see this time and again. God never gives up on us. The mountains may fall and the hills may shake, but God’s lovingkindness will always remain.
A Lovingkindness that Never Fails
Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments; Deuteronomy 7:9 NASB
God will never give up on us. He is always faithful, even when we are faithless. He is fully committed to those who love Him. I hope you find hesed as amazing and wondrous as I do.
