Want to know the key to enduring hard times? It is relationships. First, your relationship with God and then your relationship with other believers.
Shepherding One Another Through Hard Times
And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will guide you with knowledge and understanding. Jeremiah 3:15 NLT
I honestly don’t know how non-believers make it through life without God and without other believers. In many challenging circumstances in my life, the comfort, assistance and counsel I received from God and other Christ Followers has been the key for me getting through life’s difficulties.
I know without a doubt there is power in Christian community. I’ve experienced it firsthand on numerous occasions. And, I know that life would have been a whole lot harder without all the comfort, compassion and encouragement I’ve received.
The primary way to find these shepherds and to be one to others is by participating in a local church. It is a big part of the reason we need to go to church.
Now there are likely some of you out there with stories about how your church or a Christian let you down. They failed to help you when you needed it most. Well, that happens (more often than it should), but you simply cannot shut out all other believers just because one individual or group messed up. I understand that it hurt, but there are good, reliable Christ Followers are out there and when you find them, it is amazing.
Surviving Together in Christian Community
And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity — all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. Acts 2:44-47 NLT
These verses give a picture of what it is truly like to live in Christian community. It is awesome when God changes people’s hearts and conforms them to His will. The relationships that form as a result are the foundation that enable us to survive hard times.
