I confess that sin can sometimes be fun. It is exciting. It amps you up and gives you an emotional high. However, if we are honest, we have to admit that there is also another side to sin — an inconvenient Truth.
The Truth About Sin
Sin, and the fact that all of us are sinners, is not a very popular topic nowadays. Generally speaking, we don’t like other people telling us that what we are doing is wrong. But, as Christ Followers, it is imperative that we are honest with ourselves and with each other about our sin. The Bible tells us:
People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy. Proverbs 28:13 NLT
For a while, sin is fun. It seems like an adventure. However, this pleasing side of sin always runs out. In the beginning, it seems that sin is serving your needs. It is engaging and stimulating. But, eventually, sin becomes the master. You think you can control it, but it starts to control you.
Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death…
Romans 6:23 MSG
You can literally spend your whole entire life working for your sin. Because here’s the thing with sin. A little is never enough. It always takes more to produce the “high” you once experienced. Sin is a downward death spiral. It is a hard master that works you mercilessly. Always demanding more.
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
John 8:34 NIV
It is easy to kid yourself and believe you are still in control. But, Jesus makes it very clear in the verse above that sin is the master. Again, this is an inconvenient truth, but one that we need to confront.
Stop Letting Sin Control You
They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you.
2 Peter 2:19 NLT
So, does sin have a stranglehold on you? If so, then bring it out into the light. Confess it to another trusted believer. This is the first step in finding true freedom and overcoming the inconvenient truth about sin.
