Satan does not want congregation. He wants isolation.
You are easier to pick off when you are alone. You need others to encourage you and keep you from being deceived.
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV
Trust me, spiritual warfare is real. Your enemy is real and he is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Haven’t you ever seen on television how big cats, like lions, catch their prey? They separate one individual from the herd and then they pounce.
There is safety in numbers, but if the hunter can get you alone, you are vulnerable.
How Separation Occurs
It can happen subtly.
Slowly, but surely, the enemy separates you from those that can support you.
Little by little, he steers you quietly away from relationships and meetings with other Christians.
One day you look up and you are in trouble. You see the others in the distance, but they are just a little too far away to help.
Don’t let this happen to you.
I feel very fortunate because I think this very thing was going on in my life until just recently.
I was drifting away. I fell out of the habit of making the effort to maintain close relationships with other Christ Followers.
Oh, I went to church, but I was in and out. I wasn’t really connecting with anyone.
Connection and relationship require a conscious effort. They require a commitment. I was more committed to my comfort addiction than I was to relationship building.
What Is Satan Using to Get You Alone?
For me, he leveraged my laziness. He didn’t have to work hard at it. He just quietly whispered, “That’s too much trouble. Why don’t you just relax a little instead? You deserve it.”
Satan might use a different tactic on you.
Perhaps, he’s feeding your ego helping you to believe that you don’t need anyone else. Maybe weak people do, but not you.
Or maybe he’s helping you to feel quite offended and upset by someone so that you’ll leave the group that has been encouraging you.
Could it be that you recently discovered a difference in opinion you have with your current congregation over some scripture and it really nags you?
Possibly, you just don’t feel like you are getting anything out of it anymore so you’ve been skipping a few meetings.
It could be any number of reasons.
I would challenge you. If you are pulling away or staying away from a gathering of other Christ Followers for any reason, be very wary!
As a part of my warning here, let me remind you what Jesus tells us about Satan:
When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44 NIV
He is very, very good at what he does. Therefore, you have to really be aware and pray ardently for discernment before you pull away or stay away from any group of Christ Followers where you might be drawn nearer to God.
Satan will do anything he can to destroy this kind of fellowship. He absolutely hates it. Therefore, you want to make certain that you are not being deceived.
Beating this Danger
I know this has been a bit ominous today, but I feel it is a very important message of truth. One that we need to be reminded of from time-to-time.
I’ve personally recommitted myself to seeking out ways to connect with other Christ Followers. The payoff so far is tremendous. I feel fed spiritually. I feel encouraged. I feel stronger. I feel God working in my life through the connections I’ve made with other Christians.
A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. Ecclesiatstes 4:11 NLT
Isn’t it amazing how much better things go when we follow the wisdom found in God’s Word?
If you aren’t making it a habit to meet regularly with a small group of other Christ Followers, then I’d strongly recommend you do so. It is well worth it.
Do not let the roaring lion separate you from the others because that’s precisely when he’ll attack and then what will you do?
Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.
Romans 12:3 NLT
None of us are so good that we can do life alone. We need others to spur us along and to encourage us. This is God’s design.
