There are a lot of astonishing and outlandish claims in the Christmas story. At the very root of the tale, we are supposed to believe that a 100% pure virgin gives birth to a baby boy. But not just any baby, this baby is “God with us”.
Are you kidding!?!
Only a Fool Would Believe
When you take a step back, the Christmas story is hard to believe. Even Paul said:
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing… 1 Corinthians 1:18 NIV
The cross and everything leading up to it seems unbelievable on the surface.
Imagine if your teenage daughter came to you and said, “I’m pregnant, but I swear I didn’t sleep with anyone. It was the work of the Holy Spirit.”
What would your reaction be?
I’ll be honest. I’m pretty sure I would do three things: 1) freak out, 2) check her room for drugs, 3) sign her up for some psychiatric assistance.
A part of my freak out would likely include asking her, “Do you think I’m a complete idiot?”
In the real world, a baby born of a virgin seems like utter foolishness.
Pray for Eyes to See and Ears to Hear
You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen. Isaiah 42:20 NIV
Christmas is the perfect time to ask your family, friends and neighbors to go to church with you, but if you do I’d highly suggest that you pray earnestly for them first.
It can all seem like foolishness unless God gives them eyes to see and ears to hear His message.
Look at what Jesus says:
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. John 6:44 NIV
It takes the Father to draw someone to Jesus. He has to give them the ability to hear and understand His amazing message.
So, today give your family, friends and neighbors the greatest gift you can give. Pray for them! Ask God to prepare their hearts and minds to receive the Good News that a Savior is born!
