When you are spiritually dry, it can feel like you are mired in quicksand with no way out. Hope and passion are absent wherever you turn. You need a remedy to cure your dryness.
Learn to Combat Spiritual Dryness
So, what is the antidote to spiritual dryness? How can you get over it? Look at this popular verse:
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NLT
The first half of the verse tells us to pray. Tell God what you need and thank Him for ALL He has done. THEN you will experience God’s peace which is greater than we can imagine.
I believe, from my own experience, that cultivating gratitude in your heart is one of the most powerful antidotes to spiritual dryness that exists. I think this is one of the lessons Paul is trying to teach the Philippians.
Here’s how I see it. First, I believe if you practice gratitude regularly, you can actually avoid these seasons of dryness.
Second, if you are already feeling dry, then I believe stirring up gratitude in your heart will bring you out of the dry spell like nothing else. It won’t be easy. The drought in your heart will make it difficult. It will feel very artificial and awkward in the beginning. You’ll have to literally make yourself do it. You’ll want to give up, but don’t. Stick with it and God will be faithful.
When you rejoice in the Lord, He will guard your heart and mind against spiritual dryness. If you are already feeling dry, Jesus will pour His Living Water into you as you express gratitude. He will restore your hope.
Use Gratitude to Bring You Back to Life
Then he asked me, “Son of man, can these bones become living people again?” “O Sovereign LORD,” I replied, “you alone know the answer to that.” Ezekiel 37:3 NLT
The Lord can breathe life into your dry bones again. Pray to Him. Tell God what you need and gratefully thank Him for ALL He has given you. As you do, you will feel His peace and hope fill you. Gratitude is the greatest antidote to spiritual dryness.
