There are a lot of distractions in this world. Things that want to pull our attention away from Godly tasks. There’s a lot we can learn from Nehemiah about how to stay focused on God’s work.
Don’t Stop Pursuing Your Mission
Nehemiah felt called by God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem so the city could be restored. However, as with most worthwhile tasks, there are distractors and opposition. Those that, for whatever reason, do not want you to continue your good work. This was certainly the case for Nehemiah.
Nehemiah had enemies that did not want to see Jerusalem restored. Therefore, they did everything they could to try to divert Nehemiah’s attention from his mission. But, he’d have none of it. Look at what he tells a group that wanted him to stop his work and meet with them:
Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono.” But they were scheming to harm me; so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer. Nehemiah 6:2-4 NIV
Nehemiah doesn’t want to meet. He doesn’t want to expose himself to their distracting arguments and schemes to throw his work off track. He doesn’t want to come down from his higher calling to attend to lower things.
Even in your daily walk with God, others will repeatedly try to lure you down from your great mission. I’d encourage you to respond like Nehemiah did, “Why should the work stop while I leave it and do down to you?”
Stay Focused on Your Calling
Don’t stoop to lower things! Don’t let the things of this world distract you from what God has called you to do. Stay focused on God’s work and He will reward your efforts!
