Temptation drives us to miss the target of living the free, abundant and joyful life God intended for us.
When we shine a light on temptation, we break its power.
Jesus tells us that, by studying God’s Word, we will learn the truth and the truth will set us free. (John 8:31-32)
How the Attack Begins
Temptation is an attack. The world, our flesh and Satan [our enemy] all join forces to deceive and defeat us.
Under the cover of darkness in the lonely recesses of our mind, they sneak up on us subtly as if they mean us no harm. We listen politely to the faint whispering of what they are saying. At first, it seems innocent enough so we allow it to go on. Pretty soon, it starts to make a little sense to us. We hear some things that sound enticing and maybe even true. So, we roll it over in our minds letting it seep in a little because it seems pleasant and alluring.
The next thing you know, we’re under a trance and following wherever we might be led. Then WHAM, we fall face first off the cliff into a PIT. We never even see it coming (or maybe we do but we go on letting ourselves be deceived anyway).
The trick is to recognize temptation early on and stop it before it blossoms into something that hurts us.
It Happens to Everyone
We certainly want to defend ourselves against temptation, but let’s be honest, we all fall for the lies from time-to-time.
The Bible says:
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 NASB
None of us mere mortals has ever successfully navigated this life without falling to temptation (I’ve fallen many times). However, here’s the Good News:
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:8 NLT
God has ENORMOUS love for us! All of us are still sinners (missing the target of living the free, abundant and joyful life God intended for us), but fortunately God sent Jesus to rescue us.
So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. Romans 8:1-2 NLT
We no longer have to follow where temptation leads because we have a Savior that has opened our eyes and shines a light on the tactics of the enemy. His love and truth and power give us everything we need to be free!
Tomorrow, I’m going to expose some of the common ways we are tempted to help destroy the power they have over us and help us to live in the freedom we’ve been given.
