My wife and I decided to live debt-free several years ago. She read one of Dave Ramsey’s books and from there we began following his 7 Baby Steps to Financial Peace. I feel strongly that God led us to Ramsey’s teaching and has blessed us for managing our money according to Biblical guidance.
Changing to Biblical Money Management
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NIV
The pattern in the United States is debt. Honestly, I didn’t think it was even possible to live a “normal” life without car, house and credit card payments. I thought that borrowing money was a fact of life. It was just how you did things. But, my mind was renewed, my thinking was changed and my life was transformed.
So, what does it look like to be debt-free in a society where the average credit card debt is over $16,000 per household? Well, from the outside looking in, my family doesn’t look that much different from anyone else. We don’t live like the Amish nor do we make our clothing. We own a home and drive two cars. Our lifestyle appears like that of any other average American family.
However, we do handle our finances very differently as a result of what we’ve learned and it has been a HUGE blessing. We have less stress, more freedom and fewer worries.
You might say, “That’s great for you, but I could never pay off all that I owe.” Well, there’s plenty of testimonies from regular people about how they became debt-free on Ramsey’s website. I’m convinced, from my own experience, that anyone can do it. It just takes a plan and some determination. If you want it, then you can make it happen. It is really that simple.
Follow the Bible and Reap the Rewards
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21 ESV
God cares about how you handle your money just like He cares about every other aspect of your life. He’s provided direction that can drastically improve your overall quality of life. I’m much happier since I started managing my money according to the Bible. So, I’d encourage you to stop following the pattern of this world and start down a path to true financial freedom!
