We’ve looked at HOW we should love God and others, but I want to take a step back today and look at the overall importance of love.
Trust me, you do not want to miss this.
Love Rises Above All Else
Remember, the only thing that supersedes loving others is our need to love God. Everything else in our faith stands on these two things.
That makes LOVE pretty incredibly important. Something we should make sure we understand rightly.
It doesn’t matter how “spiritual” you are. If you don’t love outrageously (by the world’s standards), then you have missed the boat.
Here’s how the Apostle Paul said it:
If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:2 NLT
Do you see how important loving others is to our Lord? Even if I understood all His secrets, but didn’t love others, I would be empty! Prophecy and knowledge and faith don’t even hold a candle to love.
Without love, we are NOTHING.
But, wait, there is more:
If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:3 ESV
Did you read that???
Actions without love are meaningless to God – even extreme sacrifice. That’s kind of an attention-getter.
It doesn’t matter how “good” you are or how often you serve at church or how much money you give or how many people you help. If you are doing these things for approval or recognition or for any selfish reason or just because they need to be done, then they are meaningless to God and you gain nothing. They only mean something if you are doing them out of love for God and others.
Love Comes First
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:8 NIV
As sincere Christ Followers, it would probably be wise of us to STOP for a moment, back up and think this over. Do we have our priorities straight?
Love must come first. You CANNOT bypass it.
That is why I put love at the very top of the 12 Essential Ways to Copy Jesus. Love is the starting point. Everything else hangs on it.
As those who are on a serious quest to copy Jesus, I think we have to really make certain we are rooted properly. It does no good to go on unless we begin with love. In this way, love conquers all.
