Everything in this world is temporary. Our time on Earth is brief. That’s why we shouldn’t be overly consumed with building a life here. We are just passing through on our way to something greater.
Store Up for Yourself Treasures in Heaven
Letting go of worldly things is the eleventh of the 12 Essential Ways to Copy Jesus.
During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught:
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Matthew 6:19 NASB
He goes on to say we should store up treasures for ourselves in heaven where they are safe.
All that we accumulate here, we will one day leave behind. You cannot take it with you. This is pretty obvious.
So, you have a choice. Store up what you will soon leave behind or store up what you will go to and enjoy for eternity.
What Is First in Your Life?
Do you remember the rich, young ruler that asked Jesus how he might inherit eternal life?
At first, Jesus told him to keep God’s commandments. The young man said he had. Jesus then said:
You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.
Luke 18:22 NIV
The Bible says, when the young man heard this, he became very sad. I think Matthew Henry’s Commentary explains it very well.
Many have a great deal in them very commendable, yet perish for lack of some one thing; so this ruler could not bear Christ’s terms, which would part between him and his estate. Many who are [reluctant] to leave Christ, yet do leave him. After a long struggle between their convictions and their corruptions, their corruptions carry the day. They are very sorry that they cannot serve both; but if one must be quitted, it shall be their God, not their wordly gain.
God tells us, “You shall have no other gods before me.” You cannot serve two masters. Owning things is not a sin. Having wealth is not a sin. But, you cannot let these things sit on the throne of our life. If God asks you to give them up and follow Him, then you must be willing to copy Jesus and let go of worldly things. Let your treasure be in heaven.
