Yesterday, I wrote about how to defend yourself against the evil schemes of Satan. Today, I want to talk about how you can go on the offensive by learning to use the sword of the Spirit.
Arming Yourself for the Counterattack
I don’t know if you noticed it, but in my last article I left out one piece of armor that is mentioned in Ephesians 6.
I purposefully omitted the sword of the Spirit.
You see, yesterday, I was talking about how to defend yourself against attacks from the enemy. The armor I mentioned – the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith and the helmet of salvation – are all defensive in nature. They protect you. But, the sword is an offensive weapon. It is used to counterattack.
The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12 NIV
When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, how did He fight back? He counterattacked with the Word of God. Check for yourself in Matthew 4:1-11. In each case, Jesus strikes back with, “The scriptures say…” And in each case, Satan is defeated.
Why? Because the Word is alive and active. It is powerful. It is the truth and the truth will set us free.
Satan, on the other hand, is the father of lies. Lying is his native tongue. When he speaks, it is all lies and misinformation.
Filling your mind with the Word of God is like carrying around a big, powerful sword. It arms you so you can defeat the enemy instantly.
Swing the Sword of the Spirit
Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand… Psalm 149:6 NASB
Fight back against the evil scheme’s of your spiritual enemy by equipping yourself with the truth. Copy Jesus and defeat Satan by destroying his lies with the two-edged sword that is the Word of God.
