Sometimes it seems that things are out of control in this world. The violence, the craziness, the anger seems like it will overwhelm us. But, we are not alone. We have a God that loves us and He can work all things together for our good.
Knowing God is the Path to Inner Peace
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;” Psalm 46:10 NIV
In this verse, I believe God is telling us first of all to calm down, to quiet ourselves and our worries. We need to be still, not just physically (although that might help too), but also in our minds and souls.
We have to hush all the noise of our worry, outrage and even that of our own logic.
We need to be still and know that He is God. What does it mean to know that He is God?
It means we need to remind ourselves that He is in control. It might not seem like it, but remember Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. In our mere mortal form, we cannot understand all that God is doing, but through faith we must believe He is in control.
Knowing that He is God is acknowledging His complete sovereignty over all matters. It is recognizing that His ways are so much higher than our ways. It is trusting that God rules over all the nations (Psalm 22:28). He alone has all authority in heaven and on earth and no one will overrule Him.
Trust in the Eternal Rock
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock. Isaiah 26:3-4 NLT
Once I remind myself that He is God, my eternal Rock — the immovable, unshakable One — my anxiety about what is going on in the world calms down. I find peace. I just need to be still and fix my thoughts on who He is!
