Have you ever noticed that despite who Jesus was, He never seemed concerned with status?
The eighth of the 12 Essential Ways to Copy Jesus is to be humble and serve others.
Setting the Example as a Servant
You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. John 13:13-14 NLT
Jesus went on to say, “I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.”
We are told very explicitly here to copy Jesus!
It takes humility to get down on the floor and wash a person’s feet. Jesus was the disciples’ Lord and teacher. He was in a position of respect and authority over them. They should have been washing His feet, but that’s not what happened.
As Christ Followers, we should be more concerned with serving others than being served.
In the flesh, it is easy to let your position go to your head. It is also easy to get busy (even with ministry) and to neglect those around you.
Jesus tells us to “wash each other’s feet”.
When was the last time that you really humbled yourself and did something sacrificial for others?
This Goes Beyond Just Serving Each Other
What about obedience to God?
For years, I failed to humble myself before God and admit that He knew best. Again, Jesus sets the example for us here. Take a look at these verses:
Though he was God,
he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.
Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;
he took the humble position of a slave
and was born as a human being.
When he appeared in human form,
he humbled himself in obedience to God
and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor
and gave him the name above all other names,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:6-11 NLT
Read these words over and meditate on them. They are powerful.
May we all learn to copy Jesus in this way.
