Have you ever faced an important, potentially life-changing decision and prayed that God would show you what to do? Did He give you a clear answer? Sometimes God does answer. But, sometimes you pray and pray and never receive any clear direction. Why is this?
Getting the Answers You Need
My pastor recently preached a sermon series on Divine Direction (you can find it here). During one of the messages, he talked about how God doesn’t always give us the answer, but He will give us the wisdom to discern.
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5 NIV
It is true that there are some tough decisions to make in life and which way you should go is often very unclear. On the surface, it seems like it would be nice if God would just tell you the best thing to do in these circumstances. However, if He did, then your life wouldn’t really be your own, would it?
Instead, God offers to give wisdom to anyone that asks.
Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. Proverbs 4:7 NLT
Where do you get this wisdom from God? I believe it starts by reading the Bible. God wrote down a whole lot of what you need to know to make good decisions. He’s made wisdom readily available to anyone that is willing to seek it. As you fill your mind with the Word of God, you develop good judgment that allows you to better figure out what to do in tough situations.
Learn the Right Way From God
I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Psalm 119:104 NIV
As you learn the way of life from God, you grow better able to discern what to do in a wide variety of circumstances. God doesn’t want to do it all for you. He’s given you freewill and a mind to think with. He’ll also give you wisdom if you’ll ask and seek it from His Word. This is how God shows you what to do.
