Yesterday, we talked about how we have an obligation to be a light to the world.
We have the power to heal the blind. It is up to us to put this power into use to destroy the darkness.
Follow This Model to Spread the Word
Now you might say, Jeff, I’m not an evangelist or a preacher. I’m just a regular person that follows Jesus. I’m not any good at convincing others.
I understand, BUT there are people you know that are lost. They are trapped in the darkness and you know the way out.
Fortunately, in The Gospel of John Chapter 1, there is a very specific and simple model you can adopt and use to help people find the light.
Look at how it begins.
The next day [John the Baptist] was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. John 1:35-37 NIV
All John did was point out Jesus to a couple of his friends. He didn’t try to convince them. He didn’t twist their arms. He simply told a couple of people that he hung out with what he knew about Jesus.
Look at what happens soon afterwards.
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. John 1:40-42 NIV
There was a chain reaction. John told two of his friends what he knew about Jesus. In turn, one of the two (Andrew) told Simon Peter. Peter later become “the Rock” upon which Jesus would build His church.
The Way the Word Gets Around
Maybe you are Peter and you’ll preach and thousands will come to Christ like in Acts 2:14-41.
But maybe that’s not you. That’s okay. I want to remind you, Peter got started when Andrew told one person, his brother, the good news he knew about Jesus. And Andrew was one of two that followed Jesus after he heard John the Baptist tell what he knew.
Often, the Kingdom of God is built one person at a time through your personal testimony – your story of how you came to know Jesus and what He’s doing in your life.
Get Intentional About Spreading the Word
I think there are a lot more Andrews in the world than there are Peters. Most of us will never preach to a crowd of thousands. However, we can all make sure that those around us – our friends, coworkers and neighbors – know that we are followers of Jesus. And we can all find the opportunity to share our testimony about Jesus with these people.
We can also invite them to church to learn and find out more about Jesus.
The Word gets around when Christ Followers are intentional about reaching out to the people in their lives.
If your friends were lost in the woods, you wouldn’t halfheartedly look for them, would you? No! You’d go with intention and purpose.
That’s how you spread the Word of God.
