Here’s a thing that I’ve stumbled over many times in my quest to copy Jesus. I forget time and again that God’s ways are so much higher than mine. I want an on-demand God. When I pray for something, I want God to answer and, if I’m completely honest, I want Him to do what I want, when I want, how I want. But, this isn’t how it works. As my pastor recently said, “On-demand God does not exist.”
My Thoughts Are Not God’s Thoughts
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9-9 NIV
Here’s how this usually plays out in my life. Something serious is going on. Someone I care about is sick. A situation in my life is going the wrong direction. A need I have is going unmet.
I pray. I ask for a specific outcome. Nothing happens. Things get worse. I pray some more. Still nothing happens.
The miracle I pray for never happens and eventually I’m devastated. I have a crisis of faith. I ask questions like this:
- I know God could have, so why didn’t He?
- If God loves me, then why didn’t He do what I so badly needed?
- Why would God let something so tragic happen?
Well, here’s what I forget, God is greater than I understand. His ways are so much higher than mine that I often don’t see what He is doing. It may look like a disaster to me, but He has a higher purpose in mind. One that exceeds my ability to comprehend it.
Nothing can separate us from God’s love. This is a fact that we can all take to the bank. And a loving God listens, hears and sincerely desires to do what is absolutely best for His followers. However, His perspective on what is “best” and ours often differs greatly. He has a higher purpose in mind.
Learning to Trust in God’s Plan
I’ve learned to trust that God has a plan. One that I might not see or understand, but a plan that is even better than my plan. He alone knows what is absolutely best for me. In fact, He knows better than I do what is best for me. God’s ways are always higher and better than mine. I just have to trust Him even when things aren’t going my way. I guess that’s why it is called faith!
