God is not fair. Life is not fair. Bad things happen to good people and good things often happen to bad people. How is any of this fair? Do you ever feel this way?
When Things Do Not Seem Fair
Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? Psalm 10:1 NIV
It often seems that God is not fair. I mean haven’t you ever prayed to God when you really needed His help or healing but received nothing in return? How can a loving and compassionate God ignore such suffering and hardship? How is that fair?
I know I’ve had periods in my life where I was doing everything I thought I should be doing. I was going to church, reading my Bible and praying regularly. I was being kind to others and generally living a disciplined life. Then WHAM! Life smacks me upside the head from out of nowhere. How is that fair?
Have you ever felt God wasn’t being fair?
I will be the first to admit that I don’t always understand God. I can’t explain His ways. However, I do think we can find some answers to all of this. Look at what Peter tells us:
…There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
1 Peter 1:6-7 NLT
Our trials are only for a little while and they have a purpose. We may not always see or understand the purpose, but we have to trust that God is good and believe in His lovingkindness.
How to Grasp the Truth About God
I agree, sometimes, God does not seem fair. However, I think it is mostly a lack of understanding and perspective on our part. If you struggle getting your mind around all of this, then I’d encourage you to read The Way I Look at This Life. I think it might help you.
