When you cling too tightly to worldly things – possessions, money, reputation, goals and even people, they become idols. An idol is anything that replaces God as the most important thing in your life.
God Is a Jealous God
You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. Exodus 20:4-5 NLT
God hates idolatry. He can’t stand it when you give to another what is rightly His – namely your affection and worship.
Would it upset you if you caught your spouse flirting with someone else? Of course, it would! You want their attention to be on you. You want to be the only one they adore.
It is the same with God. He loves you. He is your Father in heaven and He has a plan for your life. Just like it would disturb you if your spouse was wandering away, God is not happy when you place things or people ahead of Him.
Does God Have a Reason to Be Jealous?
What are you most passionate about? What gets the lion share of your time, money and attention?
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21 ESV
It is so easy to let your eyes get drawn away from the one true, living God to start flirting with other gods.
Watch this video and then ask yourself, “Does God have a reason to be jealous?” Maybe it isn’t sports for you. It could be cars or shopping or hobbies or work or even serving the poor.
If you are giving more of your treasures – your time, your money and your adoration – to anything other than Jesus, then you probably need to re-evaluate your priorities.
This can happen to anyone, even Christ Followers. Look at what Paul told the Romans:
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Romans 1:21-23 ESV
Despite the fact that we know God, we can easily be drawn away. Now is a good time to check yourself.
It is foolish to exchange the glory of the immortal God for worldly things. It is futile to copy anything other than Jesus.
