I was recently struck by the simple profoundness of this statement:
Find things to be happy about.
However, if you aren’t careful, this can easily lure you down a false path. One that may appear right, but ends in a bad place.
Avoid the False Path and All Its Sorrow
God wants us to be happy. He wants us to have joy in our hearts. However, people often seek happiness in all the wrong places. They are tempted and lured down a false path that offers lots of promises, but delivers only misery and heartache.
This idea of finding things to be happy about is great, but in my opinion, it should be accompanied by a warning label.
There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.
Proverbs 14:12 NIV
You have to be very careful to understand the pursuit of happiness correctly.
Finding things to be happy about means having the right view of your present circumstances. It is about being content wherever God has you now. In whatever season of life you are in. It is about adjusting your perspective not rearranging your life.
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Philippians 4:12 NIV
The false path lures people to do crazy, destructive things in the name of happiness. Things like:
- Abandoning their marriage because they think the grass will be greener elsewhere.
- Selfishly ignoring their children as they seek fun and entertainment.
- Running away from the responsibility of a good job to chase riches.
- Throwing away their integrity to get ahead.
You cannot manufacture happiness. True happiness is cultivated deep inside your heart. Changing your circumstances will create a momentary “high”, but it will not produce lasting contentment and joy.
Be Happy About What You Already Have
Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless — like chasing the wind. Ecclesiastes 6:9 NLT
Finding things to be happy about, in the right way, is appreciating what you already have. Do not get lured down the false path!
