We were made to resemble God especially at the soul level.
That means our souls are large. They were made for freedom, love and passionate living.
Fear is what holds us back. It traps us.
When we live out of the image by which we were created, our lives are adventurous, satisfying and fulfilling.
Saint Irenaeus said, “The glory of God is man fully alive.”
Living Fully Alive in the Image of God
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I’ve been reading a book called Fully Alive by Ken Davis. It is the story of how Ken transformed his life from feeling lost and depressed to living fully alive.
I’d like to share a few quotes from Ken’s book today along with my thoughts. I’ll begin with the quote that was the inspiration for this article’s title.
We are uniquely created in the image of God. We are wired to find the most joy in life by living out of that uniqueness. – Ken Davis
Life is most fulfilling and we are the most happy when we are living God’s amazing plan for our lives.
There are lots of unique aspects to God’s plan for your life and my life, but there are also some things that are exactly the same. A part of God’s plan for all our lives is that we live obedient to His Word. His pattern for living is the foundation for everything else God wants to do in and through us. This foundation is common for all of us.
Therefore, we have to start with the basics. Once we begin to do our best to live from these foundational principles, then God knows we are ready for more and He’ll begin to unveil the rest of the plan – the parts unique to each of us. The joy starts flowing the moment we live in obedience to God in accordance with his plan and image for our lives.
You Were Created for Giving
It really is about glorifying God with our lives. It’s not about what you can get but what you can give. – Ken Davis
Because we are created in the image of God, we are born givers.
Haven’t you ever heard it said that giving is better than receiving? That’s because God wired you that way. If you want to live fully alive, then you have to discover God’s purpose for your life which always involves serving others in some way.
Jesus modeled this for us at the Last Supper. Remember how He washed the disciples feet? Afterwards He said, “I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.”
He served others. He healed. He taught. He met needs.
We are to follow His example. He gave until it hurt.
You Have to Trust Him
You will never glimpse life at its best until you draw from an inspiration bigger than yourself. Happiness and fulfillment come from glorifying Him even when there’s sacrifice involved. – Ken Davis
Did you read that? If you want more happiness, if you feel like there just has to be more to life, then seek your inspiration for how to live from someone bigger than yourself. The ultimate big guy is God.
Stop trying to emulate other people. Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses. Pattern your life after God’s example. God came to earth in the person of Jesus Christ to show us the way. Our best life is found when we Copy Jesus (do you like how I worked that in there?).
Sacrificing – putting what we think we want aside and following God – is the first step toward real happiness.
I know it doesn’t make sense in human terms, but it is the truth. You have to trust and have faith enough to do what He says and then He’ll reward you.
Jesus told us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Stop Wasting Your Time and Start Copying Jesus
People spend enormous amounts of energy and money trying to find themselves, often searching for that sweet spot of living fully alive in places it can’t be found. – Ken Davis
Man, I’ve been there. How about you?
I’ve sought to fill that hole in my life using material possessions, relationships, accomplishments, personal development and many other things.
In the end, I’ve come to the same conclusion as King Solomon, “But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless–like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.”
It was all an empty rabbit hole. What I was looking for just couldn’t be found where I kept looking.
Ultimately, I’ve come to the conclusion that living fully alive springs forth from conducting our lives in the way our Creator intended. Letting go of all that other crap is the first step towards a better life.
You were created in the Image of God. Living in that image is where life truly begins. I encourage you to copy Jesus and see what happens.
