Where is comfort found? Oftentimes, this world is a harsh, unforgiving, difficult place to live. Watch the evening news if you don’t believe me. More than likely you won’t have to because you’ve probably experienced plenty of hardships and trials all your own.
So, how can we comfort ourselves?
Comforting Myself Never Works
I’ve already confessed that comfort is my biggest addiction. Just the normal challenges of everyday life send me running to comfort myself.
But, my flesh is insatiable. It is never satisfied for long. It constantly wants more.
So, when we turn to food, fantasy, shopping, work, sports, hobbies, relationships, sex or any other worldly thing for comfort, it is at best a temporary fix and at worst a bottomless pit.
In my experience, it never really does the trick anyway. I’ve pushed the boundaries and never found complete satisfaction.
It is as if I have a huge hole in my soul that just can’t be filled.
The Correct Diagnosis for Your Soul
Here’s what I’ve decided. I’m laying it all down at the feet of Jesus. I’m bringing Him my worries, sorrows and unfulfilled desires. I’m turning to God as my one and only comforter because the Bible tells me:
God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NLT
Also, I’ve come to realize that I was going about it all wrong anyway all these years. My real torment is in my SOUL not in my flesh. So, when I try to comfort my flesh it is like taking cold medicine when I have a backache. It doesn’t help much. I can take more and more, but I’m never going to get any relief.
The only comfort for my soul comes from God. The psalmist tells us:
Behold, God is my helper; The Lord is the sustainer of my soul.
Psalm 54:4 NASB
My soul, wait in silence for God only, for my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be shaken. Psalm 62:5-6 NASB
There is no other place I can go EXCEPT to God for comfort in my soul. That longing and thirst I feel? It is for more of God not for more of this world. This explains why Jesus said what He did to the woman at the well:
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” John 4:13-14 ESV
You simply cannot comfort your soul with anything from this world. If you keep trying, you will forever be thirsty. That’s why I’ve decided to copy Jesus and depend entirely on my Father in heaven for all my needs.
