I’ve spent the last several articles writing about love because Jesus said that the two greatest commandments are to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself. In the 12 Essential Ways to Copy Jesus, everything else supports love that tops the list.
Our quest to copy Jesus must begin and end with love. Love is supreme. Paul said:
If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
1 Corinthians 13:1 NLT
We resemble God most closely when we love Him and others radically.
Love Cannot Be Overemphasized
The importance of love cannot be blown out of proportion or overemphasized. It just can’t.
Until we get it, down deep in our hearts, that love is the most fundamental and crucial way we can copy Jesus, then there is no sense in moving on.
The Apostle John tells us:
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7 ESV
Love is from God. The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). BUT, God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son to die for us while we were still sinners in order to rescue us from our own arrogant self-righteousness (John 3:16, Rom 5:8).
Our choice is black and white. There is no gray. There is no kind of, sort of or a little bit. You are either on the side of love with God or you are on the side of the enemy. I know it stings a little to hear that, but you cannot serve two masters. You and I have to choose.
Love is the beginning and end of the choice.
What Is Your Choice
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 1 Corinthians 13:11 NIV
To grow up in Christ is to love like an adult. It is to stop being wishy-washy and tossed about by your ever-changing feelings.
Love is a CHOICE we make. A commitment we uphold for better or for worse, in sickness and in health. We utter these vows to our earthly spouses, but what is our pledge to God?
Our choice must begin and end with love. I’ll wrap it up with this:
Three things will last forever — faith, hope, and love — and the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 NLT
Did you read that? Love is greater than faith and hope! All three will last forever, but the greatest is love. In God’s Kingdom, love reigns over all.
If you want to copy Jesus, then you must begin and end with love.
