As I mentioned the other day in my article about becoming a more generous Christ Follower, the needs of the world can be overwhelming. The poverty, the sin, the pain is devastating. It seems too BIG to fix.
The Difference One Person Can Make
But, just as I was thinking, “What difference can I make?” I received an email with the following words in it:
As Edward Everett Hale so eloquently said, “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.” Don’t ever forget how very important you are in your world and remember too, that “One person is very important to God, too.” Most of His work on earth has been started by one person. God is always looking for people who will do His work on earth. Will you be the one He is looking for today? ~ Excerpted from Daily Encounter titled “The Power of One”
God uses individuals to make a difference all the time. He used Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mother Teresa. He’s also used thousands of others whose names we don’t remember, but who made a significant impact on their corner of the world.
I bet if you stop and think about it, you can recall individuals from your past who made a big difference in your life. I know I can.
Mr. Hale is right. I cannot do everything. But, I can do something and with God’s help, what I do will make this world a better place for someone. Look at this powerful quote about the difference one person can make:
“Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” ~ Robert F. Kennedy
I want to help create ripples of hope. I want to be a contributor to the current that ultimately sweeps down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
God Is Looking for Difference Makers
As I write this, names from the Bible come to my mind. I think of Noah, Moses, David, Peter, Paul and, of course, Jesus. God is always on the lookout for that one man or one woman who will rise up and stand in the gap on His behalf. Look at what the Lord told Jeremiah:
Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city. Jeremiah 5:1 NIV
God was seeking one person that He could use to save a whole city! God never changes. He’s still on the lookout for people that want to create ripples of hope.
You and I cannot do everything, but are you willing to do something? Are you the one God is looking for?
