As [Saul] was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?” “Who are you, lord?” Saul asked. And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” Acts 9:3-6 NLT
Saul had an encounter with Jesus and it radically changed his life. He didn’t recognize Jesus and he wasn’t looking for Jesus. In fact, Saul was fighting fiercely against Jesus. But, none of that mattered. When Jesus bursts into your life, you are undone. He wrecks you and then remakes you into a new creation.
The Power of Encountering Jesus
Have you seen what happens to people when they have an encounter with Jesus? Have you ever witnessed how He renovates their life?
Saul went from persecuting Christians to becoming one of the most influential Christ Followers in the early church. His life turned 180 degrees.
At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?” Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.
Acts 9:20-22 NIV
I’ve heard the testimony of Christians that had similar experiences. One was an alcoholic for many years. He simply couldn’t quit drinking and one night he rolled his car. Lucky to survive the crash, he was hanging upside down in his vehicle. That’s when Jesus showed up. There was no mistake about it. You could see it in his eyes and hear it in this man’s voice. He had an encounter with Jesus. Right then, he quit drinking.
