My family has had two close people pass away this year. It has reminded me that you always have to be prepared. Prepared to go meet Jesus, prepared to love others and prepared to offer a word of encouragement.
Do Not Get Caught Unprepared
Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. The five who were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps Matthew 25:1-3 NLT
In this story that Jesus gives us, He clearly points out that being unprepared is foolishness. The distinction He makes is crystal clear. One that we shouldn’t ignore.
The events of this passed year have reinforced this to me. The prepared person is ready to respond no matter the situation.
At midnight they were roused by the shout, “Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!” Matthew 25:6 NLT
Who would think that the bridegroom would show up at midnight? It is often when you least expect it that you are called out by God through a situation in your life. If you are unprepared, then all you can do is look back in regret at the missed opportunity.
The prepared person has been doing the right thing all along. They’ve been building and nurturing their relationships. They’ve fed themselves on the Word of God. They’ve surrounded themselves with Christian community. Bottom line, they brought along plenty of oil for their lamp.
Keep Watch and Be Prepared
So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return. Matthew 25:13 NLT
Don’t let life sneak up on you. Be prepared. You never know what is just around the corner. Do that thing that you know you should do. Don’t be caught off guard at midnight when the unexpected happens.
