A Taste of the Sweetness of Jesus

Have you ever had a moment where you tasted the sweetness of Jesus?

Something just hits you and suddenly you are overcome with Him.

His presence is so palatable that sweetness is the only way you can describe it because you feel His love and you see clearly, if just for a moment, how much he cares for us.

This happened to me in the midst of the most common, routine errand the other day.

A Recent Encounter with Him

On Saturday morning, I decided to hop in the car and zip down to Starbucks to grab a coffee.

I flipped on K-LOVE, which I hardly ever do because I cherish the quiet time I get all alone in the car.

Anyway, for whatever reason, I tuned in and the first thing I heard was a man talking.

He was in the middle of a sentence and he was saying, “…immediately I heard and felt things cracking and popping in my chest.”

Well, this got my attention, so I began to try to figure out what was going on.  It soon became clear that this man had been underneath his Honda Odyssey minivan when it fell on him.

Apparently, he was working on it, maybe changing the oil, when suddenly it came down, crushing him.

He said, “At first, I cried out in the natural.  I screamed for my son to get the jack.”  But, the jack was broken.

He then began desperately wailing for Jesus to help him.

But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence.  Jeremiah 17:7  NLT

He felt the van lift a little, but it came back down.

His 15-year old son was trying to lift the van off his dad.

Miraculously, on his second attempt, his son, who he jokingly said was allergic to the gym, was able to lift the 4,200 pound minivan enough for him to slide out from under it.

By this time, his next-door neighbor lady had heard his cries for help and came out to see what she could do.

His son and neighbor prayed over him while they waited on the ambulance.

The Outcome Was Really What Got Me

The emergency room doctor said, “You are an incredibly lucky man.”

He didn’t have so much as a cracked rib despite what he heard when the van fell on him.

No organs were damaged.  No bones were broken.  He was sore, but he was released from the hospital and was out playing soccer later that same day.

The van was so heavy that he had impressions etched into his back from the concrete driveway that took weeks to go away.  But, no permanent damage.

That’s all incredible, but what really got me was the conviction and passion in this man’s voice as he told how Jesus used his son to save him.

He is convinced – beyond a shadow of a doubt – that Jesus answered his cries for help that day.

He is completely confident that he was healed of the injuries, the ones he heard and felt occurring, when his son and neighbor prayed ardently for him.  I mean he heard and felt his bones being crushed, yet the doctors couldn’t find anything seriously wrong with him.

I doubt I’m doing his story justice, but listening to it, I was overwhelmed with emotion.

I tasted how sweet it is when Jesus shows up in a powerful way in your life.

Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!  Psalm 34:8 NIV

I felt this man’s love for his Savior.  I heard him giving glory to God in heaven.  I tasted the sweetness of Jesus in his words and I relished all of it.

I wished I could shake his hand and thank him for having the guts to call in to a radio station to testify to the love of his Lord.

It was amazing.  One man brought me closer to my God on Saturday.
