The Bible is full of life-altering lessons. But, I have one to speak to you about that I think is particularly powerful and significant. If you can wrap your mind around this viewpoint, it will drastically improve your life.
Why This Is Important
I think we can all agree that this life is difficult and confusing sometimes. It is hard to understand why certain things happen. At times, I hunger for anything that helps me keep my mind straight about life, God and my purpose here. You see we don’t have all the facts. Not why we live here on this earth. So, we have to take what we’ve been given and try to make sense of it all.
That’s why this concept makes such a big difference. It has helped me create a better mental picture of what is going on. I’ve told you before the way I look at this life and how it helps me. You might want to read it again before we go on. (Go ahead, I’ll wait.) This thing I heard recently adds to my view and decidedly makes it better. This new information clarifies and expands on my perspective.
This New Viewpoint Changes Everything
The teaching I heard talked about how perspective is so important. Your perspective can be significantly different depending on your vantage point. Sometimes your outlook on life is obstructed by where you are standing — where your thinking is.
That’s why this is so life-altering. For me, it was a significant adjustment to my view. A concept that I heard before, but never really owned or incorporated into my perspective.
The teaching comes from this verse:
So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
2 Corinthians 4:18 NLT
Please read this next part carefully and really think it over. This is extremely powerful once you get a hold of it.
If you look at your WHOLE life, then your earthly life is only a small part. As a Christ Follower, you have eternal life that extends well beyond this earthly life. Imagine your whole life as a timeline that stretches across this entire page. The earthly part of your life would be a tiny speck at the very beginning. The verse above tells us that we cannot fix our gaze on this speck.
Your troubles are confined to the speck. They are stuck there. Once YOU move past the speck, YOU have the rest of your eternal life to enjoy. Beyond the speck, across the rest of the page, there will be no more death or pain or suffering. God will wipe away every tear. He will give you a new body and it will last forever. You will never thirst again. You will never worry or be afraid or struggle. Your freedom will be perfect and everlasting.
I’m living in the speck and I’ve been fixated on the troubles I can see now. Instead, I need to fix my gaze on what I cannot see — the rest of my life beyond the speck. I have a LOT of joy and celebrating and fulfillment to look forward to. All of the difficulty will soon be gone, but the good stuff will last FOREVER!
This new perspective is life altering. I will explain more about how life-altering this is in Part 2.
